Doomed men of the holocaust

"Now we marched mechanically along the street-a column of doomed men."

This quote alone raises so many thoughts and questions on how the men felt about their future.  The way the word mechanically is used makes it seem as if the men didn't know what life was anymore.  It's similar to how a job works sometimes.  You work for so long you don't think about it anymore you just zone out and mechanically do the job.  The placement of this sentence in the book and the words used make you realize how little hope they had.  It's almost as if the Germans took all of these men in and completely brainwashed them of anything that they used to know.  Throughout the whole book Jews were seen as objects instead of people.  No one ever considered their feelings or what they had to say.  It's pretty sad that people let this happen.  Although many did not know about the holocaust the ones who let it happen are horrible.  Anyone that took place in the holocaust should not ever be forgiven.  I think that they shouldn't because they did all of this cruelty for no reason at all.  I have nothing against Germans today or the Germans that didn't support the holocaust.  Although the ones who knew about should have at least done something about it.  So throughout this story and this quote you can see how the Jews had no hope of a future and also no feeling of freedom at all.
